La presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi, ha pedido al vicepresidente, Mike Pence, que invoque la enmienda 25 de la Constitución para destituir al presidente saliente, Donald Trump, sugiriendo que el Congreso podría comenzar un proceso de juicio político (impeachment) si Pence y el Ejecutivo no actúan.
La destitución es posible bajo la sección 4 de dicha enmienda, y para aplicarla, el vicepresidente y la mayoría de los secretarios del Gabinete deben concluir que Trump es «incapaz de cumplir con los poderes y deberes de su cargo». Una vez que lo hagan y formulen por escrito ante los líderes del Congreso, las funciones presidenciales se delegan automáticamente en el vicepresidente, Mike Pence, hasta la toma de posesión del presidente electo.
