La organización Human Rights Watch (HRW) denunció este jueves que los activistas ambientales en Irak son blanco de amenazas, hostigamiento y detención arbitraria por parte de funcionarios gubernamentales y grupos armados iraquíes para silenciarlos e intimidar a los demás.
HRW señala el caso del ecologista iraquí Jasim al Asadi, que, según un comunicado de la ONG, fue secuestrado por hombres armados el 1 de febrero, trasladado a un lugar desconocido y «torturado con electricidad y palos» antes de ser «liberado más de dos semanas después, aparentemente, tras la intervención del Gobierno iraquí».
«Ese es el último de una serie de actos de represalia contra activistas ambientales aparentemente destinados a silenciar su voz», subraya el comunicado de la ONG, que acusa también a las autoridades de Bagdad de haber detenido y juzgado a otros activistas por denunciar problemas ambientales.
