El Día Mundial del Agua se celebra cada año el 22 de marzo como un medio para centrar la atención en la importancia del agua dulce y abogar por la gestión sostenible de los recursos de agua dulce.
Se trata de tomar medidas para hacer frente a la crisis mundial del agua, en apoyo del Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 6: agua y saneamiento para todos para 2030.
En 2023, el Día Mundial del Agua se centra en acelerar el cambio para resolver la crisis del agua y el saneamiento, y la UNESCO es la agencia leader de la ONU.
Este día pretende dar a conocer la crisis mundial del agua y la problemática que afrontan millones de personas que no tienen acceso al suministro de agua potable, así como las medidas urgentes que se deben tomar al respecto.
El Día Mundial del Agua fue proclamado por la ONU en 1992. Ese mismo año se celebró en Río de Janeiro la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo. De ahí surgió la propuesta, siendo en 1993 el primer año de celebración.
