La solicitud de ampliación fue presentada por el ministro de Seguridad, Gustavo Villatoro, y fue aprobada por los legisladores del partido oficialista Nuevas Ideas (NI) y sus aliados con 67 votos de los 84 diputados.
La extensión de la medida, a la que el Gobierno de Bukele llama «guerra contra las pandillas», se aprobó sin estudio o debate legislativo.
