El ex presidente Sebastián Piñera lamentó el asesinato del carabinero Breant Rivas Manríquez, de 23 años, quien recibió un disparo mientras realizaba un control a un vehículo en la ciudad de Chillán, en la región de Ñuble.
A través de Twitter, el ex mandatario repudió el hecho y envió su solidaridad tanto a la institución como a su familia.“Condeno y lamento profundamente asesinato de mártir de Carabineros de Chile, Breant Rivas y solidarizo con su familia”, escribió el ex jefe de Estado.
Piñera afirmó que “necesitamos proteger mejor a quienes arriesgan sus vidas por defender las nuestras”, agregando que “urge aprobar el Estatuto de Protección de Policías, aún en trámite en el Congreso”.
La iniciativa a la ex hizo referencia el ex mandatario fue ingresada en diciembre de 2019 por su gobierno. El proyecto establece como agravante cometer los delitos de lesiones y homicidios hacia Carabineros, PDI o Gendarmes, de forma encapuchada o en grupos organizados.
Además, señala que se requerirá la autorización del Fiscal Regional para poder archivar provisionalmente una causa u ofrecer la suspensión condicional del procedimiento cuando se cometan este tipo de delitos.
El carabinero Rivas murió luego que junto con un compañero de patrullaje realizara un control en un vehículo, cuyas personas escaparon. El mártir logró detener a uno de los individuos, pero fue atacado con un arma de fuego por otro, quedando gravemente herido.
Fue trasladado hasta el Hospital Herminda Martín, donde finalmente falleció. El autor de los disparos fue abatido por el jefe de la patrulla, quien usó su arma de servicio. El sujeto falleció en el lugar.
