Previamente, EE.UU. llevó a cabo un ataque con drones contra un «lugarteniente» del Estado Islámico en el este de Afganistán, un día después del atentado terrorista a las afueras del aeropuerto de Kabul que acabó con la vida de más de 170 personas, entre ellas 13 soldados estadounidenses.
Anteriormente, el presidente de estadounidense, Joe Biden, declaró que su país «no perdonará» a los autores de los atentados y prometió que «los cazará y les hará pagar».
